MEANWHILE…

Manny Costello, wearing an expensive Cashmere fitted suite strode across the Spanish-tiled marble floors of his three-story palazzo; clicking the metal heels of his alligator shoes with each confident step he took. Today’s meeting would be on his territory, assuring the commission members’ cooperation went without persuasion.

The tastefully decorated gentlemen’s room he had prepared for his guests with refreshments and female entertainment was to his liking and gave him a surge of confidence as he headed toward the bar. He pulled the lid off the tumbler of his favorite liquor and poured out a reasonably-sized drink. He then made a mental note to personally thank Catalina for her work on the interior decor; she had created the perfect environment for him to keep his business partners entertained. Manny had had his palazzo built from the ground up, personally overseeing the plans and was more than satisfied with the final result.He always had an eye for quality and a sweet tooth for expense. That was one of the benefits of working with Don Santiago. Manny lifted his shot glass to his lips and downed the smooth liquor before the first of his guests arrived.

“This is delightful, is it not?” said El Fenzo Delgardo, stretching out his arms to greet Manny while being escorted into the grand room by a tastefully dressed maid. “Manny mi amigo Viejo (Manny my old friend), your home gives me great pleasures, though it is no surprise to see a fellow brother living life as a king. Rigoberto is treating you well, no?”

“Delgardo, you are too kind but I am but a humble servant of Don Santiago; as are you now that the commission is considering your return,” Manny replied whilst embracing El Fenzo in a brotherly hug. Gaspar Salazar, Commissioner of Segovia guided himself into the room with his cane. Gaspar was the oldest of the commission members next to Manny and El Fenzo. Manny greeted Gaspar the same as he had greeted El Fenzo and then helped Gaspar into his chair.

“Is Rigoberto not joining us?” Gasper asked as he grasped onto Manny’s arm when El Fenzo’s attention was directed elsewhere.

It was his understanding that Don Santiago had personally banished El Fenzo from the commission under the suspicion that he was responsible for the murder of his wife. He had also been rumored to have decapitated the wife and children of Gaspar Salazar, been linked to the fire that took the lives of Commissioner Ramon Vega’s mother and fiancé, and was tied to the disappearance of the late Commissioner Miguel Gonzales himself.

“Señor Santiago’s attendance is much needed elsewhere,” said Manny into the old man’s ear as he placed his hand on Gaspar’s shoulder. “I am sure by now the news has spread of Osana and Osane’s death…”

“And just,” Felip Gonzales, commissioner of Orense, strode into the room along with Ramon Vega, the commissioner of Ciudad Real.

“Please, my brothers, have a seat,” said Manny, smiling brightly with open arms, accepting the commissioners into his home.

He beckoned for his scantily-dressed female entertainment to assist the Commissioners into their seats.
